Rohan is feeling much better now that he is getting some meds for his bronchiolitis. He has a β2-adrenergic receptor agonist for his bronchiolitis (Albuterol), and a synthetic corticosteroid to help decrease inflammation (Prednisone). The nerdy pharmacology information was courtesy of Mara who is studying for her Pharmacology final exam on Friday...
Rohan is getting the albuterol through a nebulizer and he actually seems to really like it. He usually just relaxes and breathes really well. I don't think he even noticed that the mask they gave him is shaped like a purple Stegosaurus! How cool!
With Rohan on the mend I decided I should get hurt. I was playing racquetball against some fellow graduate students and I sprained my ankle pretty bad. I have always had "weak" ankles and I used to have to tape them before any sort of sport. I haven't had any issues for a year or so, but last night was probably one of the worse ones I've had. I actually thought my ankle was broken. But being stubborn (a Syring trait), I walked it off and played for another hour. Good idea. When I got home I took my sock off and we could see the ankle swelling. I iced it and warmed it, and took some COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitor for inflammation (ibuprofen; thanks again Mara). Today I wore an ankle brace for stability, which felt really good to have the added support. But when I took it off it really showed a lot of the bruising and swelling around the ankle. Hopefully in a week or so I'll be back on the court, but for now I can only rest it and try to keep it loose.
Here are some pictures from the last few days with a sick kid and a gimpy Dad...

Rohan Update...bronchiolitis
We spent 3 hours in Kirksville's ER this evening with our little man. He had been coughing and looking pretty miserable so I did a quick listen to his lungs and he had some wheezing along with his normal noises (he is NOT a quiet breather normally). He was also struggling a bit more to breathe and eat at the same time so we called the ER and decided to bring him in. They checked him for RSV (he was negative), gave him a breathing treatment (seemed to help for a little while), did a chest x-ray (mild congestion in a couple spots), gave him some steroids and sent us home. They diagnosed him with viral bronchiolitis, told us to watch for any worsening of symptoms and to follow up with his Dr. tomorrow. Poor little guy, looks and sounds absolutely pathetic:( Hopefully he'll have a restful night of sleep and feel a bit better in the morning.
Des Moines Trip - #2
Well we headed back to Des Moines for another visit with friends. Rohan, again, was awesome on the ride up (and back). He sleeps, makes a couple of squeaks, and then falls back asleep. He usually starts to crank out about 5 minutes from Tim & Allison's place; somehow he knows he's close. It's really weird...
We had a great dinner (as usual) on Friday night, followed by tons of conversation, and lots of pictures of the babies. On Saturday Mara and Allison headed to the gym for a "Boot Camp" style workout with an instructor. 2 hours later they came back, tired, but glad they went. I'm sure they are both feeling the effects today...:) We met up with the Crawfords (John & Margaret) for an awesome Indian lunch. We went to Tandoor in West Des Moines. They have a great lunch buffet. HIGHLY recommended. Rohan even did some photo ops for them...:)
Saturday afternoon we met up with Nate. He was all stoked because he just found out he had an accepted offer on a house so he'll be moving out of Rick's basement! We also got to meet up with Steph who was in town visiting friends and family from Fort Collins, CO, so it was a great chance to hook up. We all got to sit around and chat some more, soak up the baby presence, and then we had some really good Thai Coconut Curry that Allison made to complete our tour of Asian cuisine...:)
We left around 11:30pm last night from Des Moines because Mara has a Pharmacology exam tomorrow that she needed to study for, as well as a Pharmacology Final exam that is cumulative over the last 3 quarters. Fun! At least it will be good preparation for boards in June!
This last week we had to take Rohan to the Dr. because 3 kids in daycare have Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infections and one has pneumonia. Woo-Hoo! Rohan as a little bit of a stuffy nose, but nothing the Dr. was concerned with. Fluids and a humidifier are what he recommended as supportive care, so that's all we can do right now. Since Rohan was a little early we wanted to make sure he wasn't more susceptible to the infection, but he seems to be dealing with it pretty good. His temperature has been fairly low and aside from a night of stuffiness he's been fine. We did take the chance to weigh him at the Dr., and he was up to 7 lbs, 14 ozs! Barring any weight loss from the RSV, he should be up to 8 lbs in no time! He's already started to fill into some of the clothes he was too small for before, and Tim & Allison think he's even grown a little since last weekend.
We got some great video of Rohan dancing and Cameron doing his "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" and giggling. And as always, thousands of pictures...:) Enjoy!

V-Day Weekend
We had a really nice break from Kirksville this last weekend. First we got a visit from Mara's uncle Roger who was on his way back from a farm show in Kentucky. He held Rohan just long enough for him to fill his pants and for Mara to snap a picture...:)
Friday after work and class we headed to Des Moines to see Tim, Allison & Cameron since they had not had a chance to see Rohan yet. It took a long time (4 1/2 hours) since we drove through a really crappy snow storm, but Rohan was quite as a mouse the whole time! Thank you Rohan!!!
We got an extra surprise when Rohan's "Unkie Nate" hung out with us all weekend as well! Rohan loved meeting his "cousin" Cameron. Cameron is getting so BIG! I did not expect him to grow so much from the last time we saw him in December. Allison said Cameron was around 17 pounds already. The kid has the best cheeks ever! We had Rohan and Cameron next to each other and there is definitely no confusing them.
Friday night consisted of catching up, talking about the kids, and drinking all of Tim's beer...:) On Saturday we all headed to Baby's 'R Us and Valley West Mall to get out of the house. It was a lot of fun to just get out and enjoy the company. The mall was a little busy, being V-Day and all, but the boys were very cooperative and we had a good trip. Mara and I made dinner for everyone on Saturday night. We made our Coconut Thai Curry Sauce with Tilapia, Rice, and veggies. Always a good meal! Mara and Allison made the mistake of mentioning Monkey Bread and French Toast on Saturday night so we had to send them out to the store to pick up the ingredients for Sunday breakfast. They made us eat pink bread, but it was awesome! Tim just had to have sausage too...:)
We are going to see them again next week when Rohan's "Aunt Steph" comes to visit from Colorado! We can't wait to get out of Kirksville again. :) Hope everyone had a nice weekend as .well!

Happy 200th Birthday Darwin!
It's been 200 years since Charles Darwin was born (1809). He circumnavigated the globe aboard the HMS Beagle, and was responsible for the theory of evolution which he theorized after visiting the Galápagos Islands and noticing subtle differences in birds from different environments.
In 1859 he published his theory in a book called: On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Hopefully they'll still teach it in schools when Rohan comes of age...:)
They have several items associated with Darwin, one being the Darwin Fish, and another being the Darwin Awards. The awards are doled out to people who have succumbed to natural selection by means of their stupidity. Pure Comedy...

Randomness
This week has been pretty random for us. We had a chance to webcam with Both Grandparents (Bacon & Syring sides) as well as Josh (all the way from Deutschland)! It was great to show off how much little Rohan has grown in the last weeks since the Grandparents had seen him. He was cooperative for the most part, but a little fussy here and there. Rohan also got to see his cousin Thomas for the first time. He was quite a handful, but held still long enough to say hi and then bolt away. He's so close to walking he'll be sprinting up and down their hallways in no time!
Rohan has been fighting some bug from daycare. He's been a little more fussy and has a stuffed up nose, but overall, still active and healthy. As much as he's been eating he may even be up over 7lbs, but we'll have to wait to see.
We are headed to Tim & Allison's place this weekend so Rohan can meet his other "cousin" Cameron. Come to think of it, Allison has a scale so we may just weigh him there. We may even get a surprise visit from Unkie Nate...:)
The weather has been GORGEOUS this last week! We had 71°F last Saturday, and mid-60's this last week. We had a little cooler weather (upper 40's) today, but it's been great to see some sun! Mara and I have both been taking advantage of the nice weather and jogging outside when we can, and taking Rohan and the dogs on some epic walks. We can't wait to get to Phoenix where we can walk so much farther, and have sidewalks (or at least paved trails) the entire way! :)
I also just notice that we passed 15,000 visits on our blog! WOW! This was a way for people to keep up with what we've been doing and it seems to be doing the trick! We'll try and stay as vigilant as we have been with pictures and videos (especially of Rohan!).
That being said, enjoy the pictures & videos!
Tummy Time. It can be frustrating, but he's getting some good neck control:
Rohan's First Pear. I think he likes it!:
Squeakers. Note Linus in the background...:) :

Rohan's Due Date
We've finally reached Rohan's actual due date (roughly). We were told some time between February 5th and 10th so we split the difference and called it the 7th. We had him weighed pm Thursday and he was up to 6lbs 10ozs, and was 19 1/4 inches. He still doesn't make the percentages for any of the charts, but it's pretty safe to say he's on the lower end for most of the stats...
It's been so nice here the last few days we've taken him on a total of about 6 hours worth of walks, and at least another 2 hours tomorrow. We'll have essentially circumnavigated Kirksville by the end of this weekend...
Here are some pictures from the last week or so...enjoy!

One month!
It's been amazing to see how much things have changed in just one short month. I oscillate between hardly believing Rohan's been here a month and feeling like he's been here for much longer. He seems to have adjusted to us quite well:)
In the last month Rohan has started to develop his own personality. He's a generally happy baby that tends to cry only if he needs food, diaper change, or is generally uncomfortable. He's a snuggler and is more than content to curl up on your chest for a nap. He's been quite a bit more alert and following us with his eyes the last few weeks. He's also given us a number of smiles but we haven't been quick enough with the camera to catch them just yet. He seems to like or at least tolerate the dogs as they sniff/lick him at least a dozen times a day. Needless to say this kid is definitely developing antibodies! So, he hasn't learned to walk/talk/or do anything too exciting but we're still pretty enthralled with his little accomplishments:)
This last weekend Rohan & I were on our own Friday night and Saturday until Mike returned from IA where he was helping his grandma move into an assisted living apartment. Rohan did great and let me get a fair amount of studying done. He spent quite a bit of time hanging out in the sling which he and I both love!
Saturday was beautiful out, sunny and 60! Rohan and I took the dogs for a walk in the afternoon, I'm sure we were quite the sight...me with Rohan in the sling getting dragged around by Lucy and Linus:)It was still awesome out when Mike got home so we took another long walk in the evening. Of course the weather was just a tease as the highs have only been in the teens/20s since then.
Sunday we studied at home in the morning and then went over to our friends the Berrey's for the Superbowl. We all watched the first half and then Deana & I hid downstairs and studied for our Pharm exam during the second half while Mike & Jim hung out with their 3 girls and Rohan. I think we picked the wrong half to study! We were cheering for AZ (our new home team!) but had a great evening none-the-less.
Nothing too much new here, just going to school/daycare, working out, and studying as usual. Here are a few pictures from this last week. He is definitely getting bigger and filling out his skin more these days. He's getting weighed later this week so we'll see how much our chunky monkey has grown.
