Camping With The Caldwells

This weekend we continued the camping theme and went on a weekend trip with Greg, Nico, & Abby (AKA "Abbers The Biz"). Greg recommended an absolutely amazing place. Just north of Tonto National Forest is a lesser known forest called Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. It's amazing to think that while it was 110°F this last weekend in Phoenix, we were camping & hiking in 85°F weather! The area we camped within the forest was called Bear Canyon, northeast of Payson, AZ. From the link you can see, it's in the middle of Nowhere! The reason it wasn't as warm as Phoenix is because we were more than a mile higher than Phoenix; 7700 feet verses 1500 feet! It felt more like hiking & camping in Colorado than Arizona.
The drive up to Bear Canyon was something else. The climb to 7700 feet was breathtaking at times. We left a little earlier than Greg & Nico so we found a nice campground for us. The area is a no fee area, meaning there are no fees or reservations and first come, first serve. We horded a nice little area all to ourselves. The site is a little hard to get to considering we turned off the paved road about 15 miles before our site. Rustic doesn't even begin to describe the area. There were others from all over AZ beating the heat, but for the most part we didn't see anyone else.
We got camp set up when The Caldwell's showed up, and caught up around a nice fire since it dipped into the 50's at night. The stars were amazing as well since there is little to no light pollution there.
Saturday we first hiked on the Drew Canyon Trail which took us to the Mogollon Rim. That is site that is not even close to what the pictures show. The valley below is green, lush, and a thousand feet below. After refueling (AKA lunch) we headed to Bear Canyon Lake to hike around. It's only 3/4 of a mile from our site so we walked to it. We then walked down to the lake then preceded to weave our way all the way around the lake (almost 5 miles of tough rock trails). Just about half way around though, we found a little meadow that could have been used in a movie. It was absolutely gorgeous. We continued back to the campsite to find it had been raided! Turns out (we think), birds ransacked our campsite paying particular attention to the jalapeƱo/cheddar Cheetos, coffee and dirty diapers. They trashed our campsite! Mara was relieved to see they couldn't figure out the lid on the peanut butter container...:) We cleaned up everything, made some pudgy pies and played games the rest of the night. Greg & I found a nice piece of tree to keep us warm (see the pics)
We did have one injury on the trip. Rohan took a hot ember from the fire right onto his head. Nothing serious, just a little burn. He cried for a minute or so, but was back to his smiley self pretty quick. It looks really good now, but the pictures are just afterwards.
We got back to Phoenix and it was still 109°F. The low tonight is supposed to be 85°F, but right now (~9:30) it's 104°F still. It's really nice to know that only 3 short hours away we can be back to the perfect weather we had.
Hope you enjoy the pictures & videos!:

2 Years Done, 2 To Go...

It's hard to believe that I am already done with 2 years of Medical School! These last 2 weeks I took Step 1 of two different boards, USMLE (the allopathic-MD boards) and COMLEX (the osteopathic-DO boards) that officially marked the completion of 2 long years of classroom work. I had to take COMLEX (and pass...) to graduate but I opted to take USMLE to open up the residency programs that I can apply to. By taking both boards I can apply to MD or DO residency programs.
I know that it can be a bit confusing about where I am at in school and how many years I have left so I'll explain a little bit:
The first 2 years of med school are spent doing all of the basic science requirements along with the clinical course work. Basically I spent a ton of time sitting in class or studying at home. It seems a little weird that I won't see the same people every day anymore, definitely going to miss that!
The last 2 years of med school are when I get to do rotations with various physicians in their practice. I will be rotating through Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Psychiatry, Surgery, OB/Gyn, along with electives that I choose, right now I definitely will be doing at least one rotation in oncology, the rest I am not sure yet. Each of these rotations will be 2-4 weeks long and I have to pass a shelf exam at the end of each section to graduate. I am SO excited to start clincal rotations and get back to seeing patients, I know it will be tough and long hours but I can't wait to get going!
Over the course of this next year as I rotate through the different clinics I will be figuring out what "I want to be when I grow up", and applying to residency programs through out the US next fall. Based on the results of "The Match",it is WAY confusing and convoluted, I am matched to a residency program where I will complete the next 2-4 years of my training. After 3rd year, along with applying to residency programs I will also be talking Step 2 of the boards (USMLE & COMLEX) as well as getting tested on my physical exam skills.
After completing my 4th year rotations and passing all required tests I will officially graduate from med school and gain the "Dr" title but my training will still not be complete (come to think of it, I don't think it is ever complete). I will spend the next few years learning and practicing as much as I can in the field that I choose. Once residency is complete I will be ready to get my first "Real" job as a physician!
Wow! Just writing that all down made me realize I am 2 years into 6-8 years of schooling depending on what field I go into, seems like so long but if the next few years fly by like these last few, I'll be done before I know it:)
Kind of funny to think about...Rohan will be 2 and 1/2 when I graduate and in kindergarten when I am done with residency:)

Playing Catchup (again)

Well the last week plus has flown by so fast! Since Mara has been done with her exams we've been all over the place exploring Phoenix a little more before she has orientation next week and then starts her clinical rotations the week after.
Rohan has been LOVING the extra time with Mara. She's taken to opportunity to expand his palette a little as well. He's been getting exposed to tomatoes, yogurt, ice cream, fruits/veggies, refried beans, hummus, bread & butter pickles, and today he had palak paneer! He's done great with all the new & ethnic foods we've given him. As soon as he gets his teeth he can start eating right from our plates! :)
We have been taking the little guy in the pool to cool him down (pretty much every night). He seems to love the water. We've dunked him under a couple of times. Usually he ends up smiling, but not always.
I had a great Father's Day weekend. Saturday we hiked Pinnacle Peak, hit Greg & Nico's pool, then the driving range, and finally back to the pool. Pinnacle Peak was an easy hike, but we wanted to try out the backpack from Cari & Rob. Rohan seemed to like it enough to give his sleeping seal of approval. The view wasn't bad either! Rohan really was enthralled with all the motion and action at the driving range. He jumped a couple of times when the driver came out, but never cried or anything. Sunday I went golfing with Mara's Uncle John, Jordan and his soon to be brother in Law Aric at the San Marcos Resort. It was a lot of fun, and I didn't have to buy a beer all day...:) I also did something I've never done before. I drove a 312 yard par 4 green! By far the longest (straight) drive I've ever had. We had a lot of fun that day, and I can't wait to cold with The Schmits again for Jordan & Kailea's wedding in July.
Tuesday morning the family headed up to Cottonwood, AZ to Dead Horse Ranch State Park. It was great to get out of the city and enjoy absolute solitude. Amazing this place was only 2 hours away! We had an awesome campsite view of the mountains, great sunsets & sunrises, and even treated to an almost complete rainbow (and it's reflection rainbow). I've never seen this bright of a rainbow. It was so bright you could even see ALL of R.O.Y. G. B.I.V. During the day we headed into Sedona to check out the red rocks. What a sight! At night we just stared up at the sky in awe. The Milky Way was pretty clearly defined, and we saw probably 20 shooting stars. I don't think I've seen that many in 10 years combined. We headed out on a hike really early on Wednesday morning (~5:30) so we could beat the heat. The hike was about 8 miles worth , and going through and over several valleys, so we got a good workout!
Now to Linus. Poor Linus. We said when we came out here one of them would find a cactus. It was Linus. He jumped off the trail and landed square onto a Prickly Pear cactus. He only let out one yip, but there were so many more to come. He had about 20 of the main, long needles in his legs and underbelly. One must have hit a vein because when I pulled it out it spurted blood onto the sand. Upon further inspection he had hundreds of little, secondary spines in his pads, legs, chest, and face. Those took a while to get out, but the main ones (on his feet) were the most important so we didn't have to carry our prickly dog back to camp (about 3.5 miles away!) He seems to have pulled through, but maybe a little wiser(a big maybe). Schroeder came up to Mara at camp and had a spine in his nostril! He didn't even flinch when she pulled it out. Completely different dogs.
Hope you enjoy the photos & videos!

Busy Week Already!

As usual, we've been keeping ourselves busy. Monday Mara took her first set of board exams (USMLE, but I'll let her post about that). I asked Nicole to come watch Rohan for a couple of hours and I surprised Mara with a post-test celebratory trip to a cool little wine bar near our place called Uncorked. It was really relaxing, plus the wine & cheese were awesome! We missed that sort of thing in Kirksville. We then picked up Rohan (who LOVED his time with Nico) and head up to Sunflower, AZ. I had picked a little spot out to go stargazing using Google Maps & Google Sky so we drove up north of the Tortilla Flats into the Mine & Boulder Mountains. There is a trailhead for the Ballantine Trail which we parked at and watched the stars float by. It was really beautiful weather ~80F. We stargazed for over an hour before we figured we'd better head back. We were attracting animals and ants so we'd rather not confront a mountain lion...:)
Last night we went on our longest jog since the half marathon last year, and 8 mile jog to the base of McDowell Mountain. It felt really good, and had a solid elevation change of about 300 feet right at the base, so that was pretty strenuous. That and it was at the halfway point so it kicked our butts at 4 miles. The run back was pretty too. Since we were 300 feet about Scottsdale we had a nice view coming back, especially since it was 11:30 at night...:) We got back and after laying Rohan down (who slept through the whole run!) we hit the pool to cool off and the hot tub to relax our legs a little. They are a little sore today, but the hot tub helped tremendously!
Rohan is growing like a weed as well! We really notice him stretching out lengthwise. He's getting a lot stronger now also. He's holding on when we pick him up, and sitting up really good too (not quite on his own yet). He's also found his feet and plays with them quite a bit. Rohan has also enjoyed playing "Popcorn" on the bed...see the video for his giggles.
Since Mara was in study mode on Saturday night, I went to a Diamondbacks game (that's baseball Jen...:P) with Greg & Nico. We hung out at their pool then hit the game while Mara puppy/baby/house sat. It was a good game, lots of run, but the D-Backs didn't win. We didn't stay for the Lifehouse concert afterwards, which Greg really wanted to see, but he would have lost his last "Man Card" if he stayed to we spared him the humiliation...:)

Our Apartment

Well, I've had some requests to see pictures of our apartment since we haven't really shown any. Our place is finally coming together, but there are still a few boxes we are trying to find places for. We've thrown a ton of stuff out, that we shouldn't have moved in the first place, but for sure our place is smaller than our house in Kriskville. It's about 400 sq. ft. smaller, with a lot less storage (no garage).
All in all we really like it here. The location in the complex near the pool allows for quick dips, near a grass plot for the dogs, and secluded on the back side so we don't have too much traffic or noise. The workout facility is a short walk, and doesn't seem to be very busy, so that's another plus. The only real downer on our apartment is the kitchen. The appliances work great, but it's so freakin' small! If you know Mara and I, we love to cook together. We end up dancing around each other most of time, so it's taking some getting used to.
We are also REALLY close to a large soccer complex that is perfect for jogging around. Last night we made a few laps around it and into the neighborhood around us and ended up being a 6 mile jog! It's really quiet and nice. The jogging stoller is awesome too. Because of the no snow or hard freezes, the concrete has very few cracks or bumps so Rohan usually sleep through the whole thing (unlike Kirksville). Unless of course Mara runs him through a sprinkler...he apparently doesn't like to be woken up that way....:)
Anyway, here is a small slideshow of our place. Some of the pictures are panoramas so you may want to click on them to view a larger image you can zoom in on them. The lighting was a little shadowy (is that a word?) so there are some seams you can see. Oh well. Enjoy the pics!:

Good Reads About Air France 447

Scientists are trying to piece together what exactly happened on Air France Flight 447 that went down off the cost of Brasil on June, 1st. Some have great reading material, so have great images and projections of the flight path through the storm.
One blogger, Miles O'Brien from True Slant, has a great (and ongoing) blog about the crash. Here is the first link. You can go through the rest by clicking "Next Post" at the bottom: Dark Stormy Night.
Another scientist is Air Force meteorologist Tim Vasquez who put together cordinal data to show the flight path and possible crash sites. His data is here: Detailed Meteorological Analysis
Others have posted satellite images of the storm called a mesoscale convective system. It's essentially several storm, converging into one, feeding off one another, becoming a bad @$$ storm. Here is on image of the system:

I personally have NEVER seen black, grey and white on a Doppler radar image before. This had to be one strong storm!
Another image shows the storm, and the projected flight path of Flight 447. The cross is where the last transmission came that all the instruments were failing. Other labels mark the strong updrafts fueling the storm:

Finally the storm itself was massive. The top of the anvil of the cumulonimbus clouds were topping out at at least 56,000 feet! The flight level for flight 447 was only 35,000 feet. There was pretty much NO way this plane could have avoided this storm and subsequent crash. This image shows the vertical comparison of flight 447 and the storm system:

Hopefully they will find the black box to figure out exactly what happened, but until then all they have is speculation. This is pretty interesting (at least to me) to read about how insane it had to be for the pilots (and passengers) for flight 447, as well as how narrow of a "flight envelope" they had to fly through.

Forgot To Add A Title...:)

Here are some pics from our week so far. It's been absolutely gorgeous weather and we've been taking advantage of it. We've been spending some time at the dog park, going for run, and enjoying the pool & hot tub.
Rohan has been trying some new foods. Last week was sweep potatoes, this week it's peas (Aunt Sally's favorite!). The video shows that peas must stimulate Roahn's amygdala in his brain because he cheeses out and waves his hands all over. It's not quite as comical as his cousin Cameron "playing the piano", but it's funny nonetheless. He's also learning to spit the food, which is nice. Maybe it's the genes from his distant relative "Pellet Gun" Krause...:)
Rohan has also been taking baths in the sink, and sits up really well, which aim a certain hose towards spectators...
On the dog side of things, it hasn't been that much fun. The dogs have had very bad diarrhea since we got here. Greg's dog, Abby, had the same thing when they moved to AZ, so we think it may be some bacteria and such that they just aren't used to. Schroeder has been the biggest culprit, but Linus is not without his "talents". To put it bluntly, he crapped all over some of Rohan's books. We didn't even consider trying to save them...it was that bad. Good thing we have plenty more, and Aunt Shell is sending more reinforcements. Schroeder takes the cake though. I'll preempt his ne plus ultra with the time Mara and I went to lay Rohan down on the bed only to see that Schroeder had literally sprayed crap all over our duvet and quilt. Luckily the laundromat had high capacity washers & dryers. Later that same day I was on the floor with Rohan and Mara came in and said "DON'T MOVE". Schroeder had taken a giant crap right behind me, and on one of Rohan's blankets too boot. Then...the topper...I thought I would never say this, but Schroeder took a dump on our coffee table. That's right...the coffee table. I swear that dog is some sort of shit-ninja. Needless to say, we've gone through a lot of carpet cleaner and elbow grease.
Enjoy your random Thursday pics! Don't worry, we didn't get any of Schroeder's "trophies" on film:

Weekend Hiking & Swimming!

The weather has been absolutely amazing since we've been here. Call us crazy, but it was 92°F the other day and we actually thought the pool was too cold and we went into the hot tub! With little humidity (~11%) and a slight breeze, the evaporating water cools you down fast. We haven't had the A/C on since Chris & Shell left, and it has really stayed pretty comfortable in our place. We do turn it on when company comes though...:)
We've found a really cool dog park at Chaparral Park in Scottsdale. They have areas for active and passive dogs, and since Schroeder is new to the social scene we've been hanging out at the passive dogs area. It's a little misleading, since many of the dogs are just as active as the other side, but maybe not as aggressive or as big. It's been a lot of fun to be be back at the dog park too! We miss all the dogs we saw in Milwaukee, and now Rohan is getting to experience it too. We promise to remember the camera one of these times!
Saturday we went to Greg and Nico's to grill out and hang out by the pool. It was a little cooler (85°F) so the pool was a little chilly, but the cold beer offset that...does that make sense? ;) Greg grilled up some brats and kraut and made brownies to boot! It was a lot of fun to see Rohan and the Caldwell's as well. They seem to be taking a liking to him.
Sunday, Greg took us to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve and we hiked Quartz Peak Trail:

It was a nice, difficult, hike. It took us about and hour to reach the summit, and about 20 minutes to get back down. All in all, about 3 miles worth of hiking. Greg & Nico brought their dog, Abby, and we brought Rohan in the front pack. That kid loves to sleep and hike! We headed back to our place, meet up with Sasha, had some salads and hung out by the pool the rest of the day. Mara and Sasha hit up Starbucks for the afternoon and studied for their upcoming USMLE exam. Later that night Mara and I headed back to the dog park to wear out the dogs again, and capped a really fun weekend! Hope you enjoy the pics & vids!:

I love that you'll do anything to make me feel better when I am sick, tired or just whiny.
I love falling asleep on your shoulder.
I love that you take such good care of Mommy & me.
I love that you teach me how to do new things like drink from a sippy cup, eat cereal, sit up, roll over, stand, and pretty soon crawl!
I love that you read to me, sometimes science books, and sometimes kids books.I love to make you smile:)
Most of all I LOVE YOU!
I hope you have an AWESOME birthday Dad!
Love,
Rohan

Happy birthday to my wonderful husband! I hope you enjoy your birthday!

Rohan's Firsts'

The last few days have been flurry of firsts' for Rohan.
First:
  • Time in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arizona.
  • Night away from Mom (Thanks Aunt Heather & Uncle John!!!) It worked out really well to have him gone the first night we moved in, we were able to get a lot done that wouldn't have been as easy had cute little boy been around to distract us:)
  • Big belly laugh! Of course it had to happen in the car after our long trip, no video proof just yet but we're working on it.
  • Time sitting unassisted for longer than a few seconds. He still likes to throw himself back pretty often so we have to be careful where he's at.
  • Sippy cup experience. He'll hold it with both hands and can get it into him mouth. He seems surprised when water comes out, and then he usually lets some of it run back out.
  • Cereal & milk with a spoon. He did really well, opened his mouth like a baby bird and ate as much as we would give him. Once again, some came out but more stayed in than came out. Can't wait to start him on his veggies, if he's anything like his parents he's going to love them!
  • Bath in the big tub! He LOVED it! This was a must after we let him play with the spoon and cereal container, he was coated in a thin layer of cereal:) We switched him into the big tub because he started to push off the end of the baby bath tub and was nearly launching himself out the top along with most of the water. He got some float time in the big tub and seemed to really enjoy it.
  • And, teething! (OK, this has started almost a month ago...)His drooling is constant and we can see/feel two bumps where his lateral incisors will be coming in. At the rate he's going it could be a few more weeks before they break through. He doesn't seem to care too much except he wants to chew on EVERYTHING!
  • Rolling over on his own. He has been trying to do this for over a month, he would get 3/4 of the way over and flip himself back. He finally did it the other night, we found out when he woke up crying and I went in to find him laying with his arm sticking outside the crib and he seemed pretty startled to have ended up that way.
  • Swimming! He LOVED it, good thing as that is about the only way to stay cool in 100+ degree weather. After his swim, he was exhausted and passed out naked poolside.

We captured many of these firsts' on video and in pictures. Enjoy!

Rolling Over (From Afar) - Just barely got in the room with the camera as he rolled over. He had a little "surprise for us" when he got to his back...:)

McDowell Mountain Preserve

Last Sunday Mara and I got up at the crack of dawn to hike a preserve that's only about a 10 minute drive from our place called McDowell Mountain Preserve. It was really pretty cool out that early and there was hardly anyone there! We hiked a trail called the Lost Dog Wash which brought us up to about 1500 foot above the city and gave us some nice views. We only went on a shorter hike just to get our feet wet and see how Rohan handled everything. From the pictures you can see he did just fine. He even took his first sip of water from a water pack...:)
We'll post more hikes as we do them, and longer ones at that, but with Summer (and 120°F) looming in the near future we may not get in as many as we'd like. Our friend Sasha gave us a nice hiking book for AZ hikes, and we have another one from Greg & Nico on hikes around Phoenix, so we should have PLENTY of trails to check out!
Here are some pics:

I like to take some panoramic pictures which can be quite large and not really "blog friendly". I'll post some lower quality images, but if you'd like the real thing just let me know. There are 3 from our McDowell Mountain Hike and 2 from the Sonoran Desert Museum with Nikki & Crawford.

Catching Up

This will be a pretty random "catch up" post to let everyone know how our first week in AZ went. First our move went GREAT! It was 32 hours of "fun", but Rohan cooperated WAY more than we could have hoped, and we all survived the drive, a little restless, but non-the-less happy to be in AZ! Michelle was SUCH a huge help with driving, calming Rohan, and moving. We can't thank her enough! Also, our Dad's really helped us with packing and loading and cleaning. We never would have left on time if they didn't help either.
Aside from the construction, there were not any major issues with the drive other than the A/C crapping out on the truck about 100 miles into a 1700 mile road trip...:( They did give us some money back, but that doesn't change the sweat box drive we had to endure. At least through NM & AZ there was some rain so that really helped.
Greg & Nicole helped us unpack once we got here, and Heather & John took Rohan for the night so we could make better progress. We were up pretty late unpacking, and it's finally coming together. Greg & Nico left on Sunday to get married in Mexico and we got to dog-sit their baby Abby. She has been so easy to take care of it's not even like we have an extra dog!
On Monday Chris & Jackson came to visit. Chris and I went and golfed the Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale on Wednesday morning. It was AWESOME! Neither of us had not played this year yet, so I was a little worried. I played pretty rough on the front, but rallied on the back. Chris played well on both and shot sub-80! We both had eagle putts on 18 and birdied to end an awesome morning round at a great course.
Wednesday night our friend Sasha moved to AZ so we helped her and her family unload their U-Haul. Sasha and her family are heading to the Grand Canyon this weekend to sight see so we got to dog sit her "Abby" as well. That's right...4 dogs...4 adults....2 kids. Awesome times...:)
Chris & Shell headed to Flagstaff to sight see and Mara and I finished most of the unpacking and situating. We headed over to Greg & Nico's to water their lawn, but more importantly...their pool...:) They have a nice salt water pool that we took advantage of and veg'd by for most of the late morning/early afternoon on Thursday. We also took advantage of their grill too since we had to give ours up. At least ours went to a good home at Nate's.
Friday we went out to dinner with Chris & Shell for Shell & I's birthdays at PF Chang's, then for a nice walk on the Camlebak Walk trail. Heather offered to come babysit Rohan & Jackson while we are out, which we ALL really appreciate!!!
Sadly on Sunday, the Stokes' left, but we'll figure out ways to keep in touch...we always do...:) In the morning Sunday we met up with Nikki & Crawford who are down in Scottsdale for a conference. We went to Tuscon to sight see and check out their Sonoran Desert Museum which was really fun! Rohan did great in the sun and we got to see a lot of desert life we didn't really know about before. Plus catching up with Nikki & Crawford was great. Rohan really put on a good show for them, smiling the whole day. Nikki had a great quote saying "Seeing a child like Rohan doesn't make you so scared to have kids". We'll see about that one Nikki...:)
Hopefully we'll find some time to settle in a little more and get some more pictures up of our hikes. Meanwhile, here are some pics & vids from this insane, past week!
