Busy Bees

Sorry it's been so long since our last post. We have only been home to sleep the last week. Mara had a big Anatomy exam today, and then we both have an Immunology exam on Wednesday! The fun never stops in K'ville!
We had a BBQ last Friday for our Wellness Day off of school, but it rained all day, so we had to move it inside. It was still nice to visit with everyone without school being on every one's mind! All in all we had 15 people, 3 dogs, and a kitten even made an appearance. We are still eating the leftover grilled food! Everyone brought really good food too! Afterwards we went to our friends John & Audrey's and played Rock Band. It was fun, but I liked Tiger Woods Golf better...:)
We even found some time to enjoy the nice weather we had last week too! We even studied outside (with the Brewer game on of course), while Lucy hunted the newly awakened bunnies & squirrels. Brian & I got out and golfed last Friday. It was a little windy, but we really wanted to get out and use our membership! At least I can blame my score on the wind and not my lack of skills...:) Here is an idea of how windy it was:

Most of these pictures were taken with our phones, so sorry for the poor quality!

36 Pounds of Mental Health!

We ordered some Indian food from our favorite Indian Grocery in Milwaukee. They were having a 2 for 1 special on a bunch of our favorites so we ended up getting a BOAT LOAD, 36 pounds shipped to us. They are so fast with their orders too! We just ordered it Wednesday, and it's here already!

We won't be having Indian tonight though. We are having some friends over for a BBQ, despite the rain. We were supposed to play golf today, but there is a 100% chance of t-showers, so Ithink we'll miss our 1:00 tee time. The BBQ will be unphased since we have a nice porch to grill on. Last count there was going to be 17 people, 6 dogs, and 1 kitten. Should be a full house! I think we'll have plenty of room, and as long as we can keep Lucy out of the creek, the house should stay fairly clean...:)

Lucy did meet a new friend at the creek this week. There isn't any sounds since the wind was so loud. Lucy's lucky it wasn't a snapper:

Mara and I had the day off of school today. They call them Wellness Days, but we prefer to call them Mental Health Days. It's supposed to give students the oppurtunity to take a day off of school and keep their mind healthy too. I have to work in the lab, but it will only be a half day today, since we were supposed to golf. But you can't look foward to a half day, then work a full...that's just not right. The last Wellness Day Mara had they had an Anatomy exam AND a Physiology exam that next week, so people really couldn't take advantage of the time off. We had a Medical Microbiology exam yesterday, which we both did really well on, so that was a good way to start our Mental Health Weekend...:)

Hope the weather cooperates with everyone else's weekend!

Fun With The Dogs

This weekend was mostly spent studying (like always), but we did find some time to play with the dogs for a while.
Here Are Some Pictures From This Weekend:

Mara and I (mostly Mara) did do some "Arts & Crafts" this weekend as well. We have an exam coming up in Medical Microbiology on Thursday and we have quite a few organisms to know, as well as their differential tests, unique attributes, and diseases they cause. One of our friends gave us the idea of making a poster for the two types of bacteria (Gram Positive & Negative). We liked them so much we put them on our wall to really "dorkify" our kitchen:

I just couldn't leave this out of the post. Dad sent me this picture of Mom from their weekend in Onalaska, WI with Mom's brother & sister...still not sure what's going on...

St. Louis 1/2 Marathon

WE FINALLY GOT SOME PHOTOS FROM THE RACE! SEE THE SLIDESHOW BELOW:

We didn't train well, we didn't break any land speed records, but somehow we finished 13.1 miles in just under 2.5 hours! We never stopped jogging, even up the steep hills. Our official time was 2:37, but we stopped a couple times along the course to use the restrooms. I used my watch to time our running time and it was 2:26. Our goals were to 1.) finish the damn thing, 2.) Try and get under 3 hours, and 3.) never walk. We got all of those and beat the 2nd goal by a half hour, so we were really proud of ourselves.
Mara and I were with a bunch of our friends from KCOM. Some were running the 1/2 and a couple of crazies were running the full 26.2 miles. As Pete quoted from The Simpsons: "Did you dain your bramage?". We got to StL Saturday afternoon and got our race shirts, bibs, etc., and then went to a pasta place to carb-load. Our hotel (The Crown Plaza Downtown) was REALLY nice, and very reasonable. We had a HUGE room on the 28th floor with an awesome view of the St. Louis Arch, and we were also straight out from center field of Busch Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals play. Too bad there wasn't a game that night, we would have had awesome seats! Here are a couple of pictures from our hotel:

The race was actually a lot of fun. We couldn't have gone with a better group of people. The course had some pretty brutal hills too, and from what our crazy marathon friend Jenny told us, the full marathon had an even worse route with hills trough Forest Park. All and all, everyone had a great time, and Mara and I relaxed for 30 minutes or so in the school's hot tub and saunas. We were a little sore, but really, for how little we trained, it feels really good. Here is a group photo of everyone from KCOM:

What would one of our trips be without a little medical drama? I swear every trip we go on is like a freakin' ER episode. After supper on Saturday we went back to the hotel lobby and studied for a few hours (everyone had a Physiology exam Monday morning). We heard what sounded like some threw their luggage down the escalator, but when Mara looked up she saw an arm, and someone tumbling down the roughly 45 foot escalator. Mara rushed over an took care of the woman, who had gashed her head pretty good. If you're queasy ignore the next couple of sentences. Since she had been drinking at the hotel bar her blood was pretty thin so there was quite a lot of it pooling at the foot of the escalator. I ran an got towels and Mara got the bleeding under control until the paramedics got there. When she took the towel away a small bone fragment was stuck to it, so she gouged her head pretty well on the escalator. By the time the paramedics got her on the stretcher she was starting to come around, but she was probably pretty intoxicated. Other than a lot of stitches, there didn't seem to be any major injuries so hopefully she'll be OK.

We did get to see one guy, Dr. Ed Wolfgram, who is definitely insane. He is a professor of psychiatry at Wash U's School of Medicine in St. Louis, he's 71 years old, and has run a marathon in all 50 states PLUS D.C! He has also run 8 Ironman Triathlons (2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike race & 26.2-mile run) and is the current world champion for the 70-74 age group, beating his last opponent by 45 minutes and setting a world record for his age group. That is just nuts!

GOTCHA!!!! :)

OK, seriously...we are both in medical/graduate school, do you really think we have time to have a kid!?!? Unless we could leave the kid in a kennel with the dogs all day (Linus can be quite the motherly-type), kids are not on the horizon for us.
We were pleasantly surprised with how many people we got with our little ruse, it was definitely worth the effort...:)
Here is a good-ol'-days photo of Linus and Lucy when she was 8 weeks old. He can be very maternal:
