After our hard drive decided to take a crap on us, we are back online. We lost a TON of pictures from the last 4 months. The last time I backed up to something OTHER than our backup hard drive was the end of March, so we lost all our pictures and videos between March and now. Luckily we are pretty good about updateing our blog, so all the pictures we've posted in the last 4 months (over 1200 of them) were all recoverable through Picasa & YouTube. For the most part those were the highlights of the pictures, so we are happy to at least have those!
This last week ended Mara's stint playing Phychatrist, which she is not too upset about. She was happy for the experiance, but glad to be moveiing on to Internal Medicine. We took some time Thursday to head to AZR and rock climb for am 2 hours or so and then came home and rested. Friday, we were planning on backpacking a trail called Cave Creek (an area Greg & Nico took us to in December). We entered the Bronco Trailhead and hiked for about 3 miles when we realized Rohan's neck was getting rubbed by the strap on his carrier. It's never been an issue before, but for some reason he must have been leaned that way, but it was rubbing pretty good. We decided not to hike in and camp and headed back home. We were disappointed, but it's only an hour away, so we'll be sure to hit it again this winter. We ended up going to REI to browse and relaxed the rest of the night.
Saturday we got up bright and early, around 5am. We didn't get our 7 mile training run in on Friday since we hiked so we fit it into Saturday's busy schedule. We beat the sun up, and ran to the East. The sunrise above McDowell Mountin was gorgeous, and we really enjoyed the run. So much so we ended up extending it to 8.5 miles. We came back and made a light breakfast. Mara got some studying in and Rohan took a nap. I edited some of the pictures that we had, and subsequently lost to the hard drive failure. After lunch we took Rohan to AZR and rock climbed for a bit, which ended up just bouldering for an hour or so, which was a lot of fun. We usually just climb, but bouldering has it's own skill set and we were practicing some climbs too. We made a really good Indian style supper and also made some granola/protein bars, and capped the niight off with a nice drink or two (or three...).
Suinday we cheered Sasha on while she did a sprint triahalon (1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike, & 3.1 mile run) in preparation for her half ironman in October (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, & 13.1 mile run). Yeah, she's a little nuts. Rohan was slowing us down in the morning, and we thought we would miss her finishing by the time we got parked. But Mara's sharp eye spotted her while we were driving by the race and we got a couple of pics of here on her bike. We made our way to the finish and met up with Ali & Abby after we cheered Sasha on at the end. We went our for breakfast and then Mara and Sasha had to finish a quiz for their last rotation. Later that afternoon Sasha somehow had energy left over so she came up and we went back to AZR and climbed for another 3 hours. After climbing we went to Pita Jungle where Rohan got his first taste of Tabouli...turns out he loved it! We found some time to relax and get ready for another week of fun before Rohan and I head to WI to visit family for a week. We are getting really excited to see everyone again!
If you notice some of the pictures are a little better, and the video is in HD, it's because we got a new camera. Our Canon SD630 started dying on us and Nico had some great suggestions for cameras. We got a 12.1 MP Canon SD780 IS, and we absolutely love it! The video is leaps and bounds above what we had before. From 480 resolution to 720 HD is a huge improvement! Now everyone can see Rohan in HD...:) Enjoy!

Technical Difficulties
Our computer recently took a turn for the worse (cyclic redundancy errors on the hard drive are bad!). HOPEFULLY we won't lose ALL our pics, but thankfully we have some backed up and the best of the more recent pics on Picasa, so we can always get them back. The others may be lost though, unless I can figure out some way to get them off (or someone else can).
I'll check back in a couple of days, or sooner if I figure it out, and update everyone on our weekend. It was fun-packed as usual!
Back to the PC OR for me...

Another Fun Packed Weekend!
Not much new has happened to the Syring's this week. Rohan is cutting teeth like crazy. He's up to the two front below, and a chompers in the front on top. 2 fangs on the top are working their way through. As long as he has something to chew on he's pretty content. He has taken to grinding his teeth a little, but hopefully that will pass.
We spent most of the week outside since it's been under 100°F most of last week! Talk about gorgeous weather. We ran over 30 miles this last week, and most of the time it was in the low 90°F's or upper 80°F's with very little humidity. We've even rigged the new jogging stroller with a 3L water pack so we make sure we are drinking enough. We've slowed our pace down for some of the longer runs, but it has made them feel even better since we can run 7-8 miles without stopping. We aren't trying to set any land speed records, we are just having fun running. When we don't have fun running, we tend not to run...:)
Rohan has been REALLY digging the pool lately. He absolutely loves to splash! He get himself as well as everyone around him, but he just keeps on splashing. We can't wait until we can get him a float suit to wear so he can splash away without blinding us...:)
We (of course) also found time this weekend to rock climb at AZR. We went once last week when we ran 3 miles there, climbed for an hour and then walked back. It was tiring, but it felt awesome. We followed that up with a trip to the pool to complete the wearing out process. This weekend we noticed our fingers are getting a lot stronger, and we've noticed holds and grips we couldn't do before so that was encouraging. Sasha and Mara both made some really good climbs on Saturday, even conquering a couple that had given them fits before. Rohan is still a ways away, but he seems to be getting the hang of it (no pun intended).
This week Mara is finishing up with her Psych rotation and SHELF exam. Next for her is Internal Medicine, which she is looking forward to. Maybe this weekend we'll work in a hike or overnight camp somewhere, we'll have to see. Hope everyone else had a great week & weekend!

So Close To First Steps
Rohan has been really close to taking his first real steps. He's been climbing EVERYTHING we have from the coffee table, to the couches, to the stroller, and even pulling up on Schroeder! Shcroeder just sits there and takes it, they really are good friends. Schroeder takes his ball to Rohan and tried to get him to play with him, it's pretty cute.
Rohan has been much more daring now that he's seeing more and getting curious by things across the room. HE's starting to hang on with only one hand, and even then he's starting to let go and balance, just for a second. Here is a little video of him getting close to taking those first steps:
Maybe he'll be walking when Rohan and I come to WI in a few weeks! :)

Alternating Brewer Game Rock Climbing Weekend
Talk about an exhausting (BUT FUN!) weekend! Friday Mara and I met downtown after her Psych day was done and headed to Chase Field where our hometown Brewers were in town to play the Diamondbacks. We got there ~2.5 hours early and walked around downtown, then the stadium for a while. We realized how heavy Rohan is getting! He's lost some of his fat rolls as he continues to stretch out. He's right around 28" now. While we were at the stadium, watching batting practice, one of the bullpen coaches (Joe Crawford) saw Rohan in his Brewers gear and tossed us a ball from center field. Rohan LOVED his BP ball! The game was great, and the Brewers didn't disappoint, winning 6-3. We sat next to a couple from the La Crosse, WI area. They were a riot, and ended up winning a trip to Puerto Viarta, Mexico! We also caught a t-shirt from their t-shirt chucking mascot, Baxter. It was a Large Diamondbacks shirt, so we gave it to the WI couple. He said he'd give it to a nephew since he wouldn't wear it either...:) They also told us about a rock formation called The Wave in northern AZ that we have to check out sometime. They also had fireworks after the game, which were a lot of fun. Rohan tried to sleep through them, but kept being enticed by the lights to watch.
Saturday we met up with some friends and their family at AZ on the Rocks to introduce them and their kids to rock climbing. Sasha was there, as usaul, and brought her roomate Ali. Chris & Janae Squires brought their sons Kasen (3) & Carter (6). They both took to the wall very well. Carter climbed to the top at least 6 times, and Kasen made it almost half way a couple of times. They REALLY enjoyed it, and judging from the pictures from supper, were worn out...:) Sasha was able to conquer one of her nemesis routes, but gained a couple more so she's got some more climbing to do. Ali didn't make it to the top on any, but she still tried her best. I think everyone had a lot of fun. Mara and I ended up purchasing a year membership at the end of the day. We have REALLY enjoyed climbing, and it's something we'd like to introduce Rohan to, so we might as well know how to climb too! The deal we got was over 70% off with our student discounts, coupons and gift cards! Both memberships are paid off if we go 10 times in the next year...we'll have that done by the end of October! After climbing we went to NYPD Pizza, and after awful service as usual, we got our delicious food. We love the food there, but seriously, the service is atrocious. Carter & Kasen ended up passing out on the bench seat and they didn't even wake up when they were carried to the car. Rock climbing is a GREAT way to wear a kid out!
Sunday we met up with Sasha and a friend of hers from Midwestern University's D.O. school, Jason, and went to another Brewers game. The Brewers, once again, kicked ass and ended up sweeping the DBacks over the weekend. Afterwards we had a couple of hours to spare before AZR closed, so we went and rock climbed a little. Our forearms & fingers are getting much stronger, and not staying sore as long. The first time we were crippled by the cramping...:) Rohan, of course, charmed everyone there. Even the staff was coming over to see him smile and giggle.
One of Rohan's fun things now is the clicking sounds he makes. It sounds like he is speaking in the Khoesaan language of clicking. We got a little video of him in the bathtub clicking. Enjoy!

Med School Fun!
All in all, I am loving rotations! It's great being back with patients, in the clinics, hospitals, jails, detention centers, group homes, etc...
My 1st two months of rotations were spent in Family Medicine clinics. The first month was at an urgent care/family medicine clinic in Mesa. A good portion of the patients were uninsured and used the clinic as a means to obtain their prescriptions for chronic medical conditions (diabetes, hypertension, back pain), while others were long time patients of the doctors and followed them from different clinics over the years. The doctors I worked with had both been in practice for >30years.
The other clinic I rotated through was at a Family Medicine residency clinic in Phoenix. I really liked this rotation, the residents were fun to work with and it was an acedemic environment with daily teaching meetings and weekly workshops. I got to see and do a lot of things, even got to do prenatal anatomy ultrasounds (where they check the heart/lungs/spine/brain) myself. I got to tell 4 parents that they were having 3 girls and 1 boy! The residency clinic has a high percentage of Spanish speaking patients so that was a whole new learning experience for me, I can understand most of the conversations, but still speak very little...seems that highschool Latin isn't helping me out as much as Spanish would have:) Since the focus was on learning and teaching, the residents were extremely willing to show and let me do as much as I wanted, some of which was "interesting" and not really blog material:) Feel free to ask, I would be happy to share some stories!
I am currently on week 2/4 of my Psychiatry rotation in Apache Junction. Let's just say I am NOT a budding psychiatrist:) I am more than happy that I have 3 education days and a national holiday during this rotation! There are a lot of interesting patients and disorders in a number of different locations. The doctor I am working with treats patients at the inpatient clinic, outpatient clinic, urgent care downtown, adult jail, juvenile jail, a boys reform school, and does telemed with a number of small town clinics southeast of Phoenix. I haven't gone to the adult jail yet, but from what I heard I should have a very "unique" experience there. I have been to the juvenile jail and reform school and seen/heard some pretty crazy stories from some messed up kids, pretty sad. I'm feeling pretty "normal" after all of the pathology I have seen in people the last few weeks:)
The change from classroom/bookwork has been really fun for me. I love being back with patients, even if some of them drive me crazy. I can't believe how quickly the last 2.5 months have gone, I'm sure the next few months/years will fly by just as quickly.

Making The Most Of Our Long Weekend
~20 miles of hiking for Mike, plus 3.5hrs of rock climbing with Sasha, capped off with a 5K in Rohan's new jogging stroller makes for a pretty full weekend!
First, on Friday Greg and I attempted our 50 mile hike of the Highline Trail.which we ended up heading home after the first day. That trail is a monster! We were not ready for the constant up and down of the terrain, in addition to the 14+ miles we hiked the first day in rain. We got to Horton Spring camp around dusk, then waited out what Hurricane Jimena dropped on us on Sat before Mara came and picked us up. The trail is a lot rougher than we expected and the elevation changes were really strenuous. I think we'll end up doing the rest of the trail in sections, and then maybe attempt the whole 50 mile trail over the course of a week or so, not 3.5 days...:) After a long soak in the hot tub we took Greg home and relaxed the rest of the evening. Greg spent his birthday with several ice packs & ibuprofen I'm sure. I really enjoyed the hike, and we are already talking about doing more there and back backpacking where you hike in 5-6 miles, camp, and hike out. That way we can get used to packing lighter and lighter (especially with Rohan), and it also doesn't eat up our whole weekend. Heather & John were kind enough to take Rohan Thursday through Saturday so we could make this trip happen. Mara and I also got to have a nice dinner (sans baby) followed by awesome yogurt treat and a nice walk around ASU's district. We really appreciate them doing that for us! THANK YOU! I snagged some pics from their blog too.
Sunday we met the Caldwell's out for some beers at Old Chicago, capped off with an ice cream treat. Before supper we met with someone selling a jogging stroller on Craigslist. It was a really nice model (Dreamer Design) that is really light. We took Rohan for a quick test run and bought the jogger.
Monday we relaxed in the morning, then Sasha brought Abby to hang out with Linus & Schroeder while we went back to AZ On The Rocks and climbed. We were there for 3.5hrs! We had a blast! Rohan's getting the feel for the wall, and will be on the rock as soon as we can get him to hang on by himself! :) Afterwards we at a light supper at Sauce and then took our new stroller for a test jog. I was a little sore from the hike still, so we only ran a 5K, but the stroller was awesome! It rides so smooth and even got Rohan's seal of approval.
All in all a great weekend! Hope you enjoy all the pics & vids!
